“We know our members, we’ve done it this way for a long time … we can’t change” is a phrase you may hear often in the association world. Here’s what we learned about disrupting the pattern and using your members to advance advocacy agendas:
• Fear the familiar – Seek out underutilized and diverse segments of your membership.
• Make your members feel valued – Get them involved in the advocacy process, and survey them to see issue interest and advocate confidence.
• Make the ask personal – Go to where your members consume content and remember, member advocates are human beings, so treat them as such.
